Mayumi-sensei worked patiently with me to determine the correct level to teach at and the right textbook to use. Working with her I quickly improved and was able to pass the JLPT 4 and 3. She also used many specific textbooks besides the standard Genki books to strengthen my weak areas. She helped me learn how to distinguish proper and casual Japanese, teaching me the different implied meanings of words and verb forms. Mayumi-sensei is excellent at helping you reach your specific language goals so I recommend her for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students who want real improvement of their skills! My Japanese language was pretty much nill at the beginning of our time together. Now I can go a full day without speaking a word of english around town. I could not believe how much I learned in just my first month. Her style of teaching and patience is invaluable. Mayumi-san speaks perfect english, which is another huge plus in my book as she can understand what you are asking without any hassle. On top of the level of Japanese language you can quickly learn through her tried and proven teaching style, she is very helpful in explaining certain culture questions you may have. Her pricing is very fair for the level of teaching you receive. Even when you think "Oh, we're just having a leisurely conversation..." BAM, she turns that into a way to teach you how to say the subject you just discussed in Japanese (something you obviously are interested in) and make that part of your lesson. She does use a text book, classroom style, but mixed with REAL conversation is the key to learning quickly in my opinion. You can only get so far on your own. You NEED someone like Mayumi-san to hear and correct you to make progression in your skills. The challenge of progression when sitting face to face with your Sensei is a great motivator! Learning this language can seem almost impossible at first glance. Even if your only goal is to go into FamilyMart without any blank stares at the cashier, I still can't recommend Mayumi-san enough!
